Leo Bar Lilly is a 1996 sorrel AQHA/NFQHA mare that came to us from Oregon.  She was in foal at that time to a son of Peptoboonsmal that was out of an NCHA Hall of Fame producing mare.  Lilly had been on an internet horse sale site for about 2 hours when I found her and there were already three people interested.  The first person with money to the seller was the one who would end up with her.  The other two potential buyers were in Florida and I was able to overnight money to Oregon faster than they were...and Lilly came to live in Nevada.

Lilly is heavily Leo bred, a line that does well with a number of crosses.  Her pedigree can be accessed through the link above.  Her sire, Smokem Dry, has money earnings as well as being the sire of money earnings and his sire is an NCHA Hall of Fame horse.  His dam, Smoky Co, is very interesting as she is by Leos Question (the paternal grandsire of Mr. Gunsmoke, multiple Hall of Fame horse) and is out of the mare Miss Gunsmoke (the maternal granddam of Mr. Gunsmoke).  This makes Lilly's paternal granddam a half sister to both the sire and dam of Mr. Gunsmoke.  Lilly's dam is a daughter of El Leos Pride, an NCHA money earner and strongly line bred Leo.

Lilly is currently in foal for a May or early June, '09 foal sired by Muchacho Pintero.  This will be her first shot at being the mother of a Paint foal and it will be sorrel or chestnut.  Again, this cross should make a terrific cowhorse with Dry Doc and Doc Quixote both on the papers on the foal.  Photos when it arrives.

Lilly was a very protective mother with her first foal....and ran me out of the round pen in which she had foaled and kept me out of it for about 2 weeks.  She has improved her trust level considerably and her second foal was still protected but not with the fierceness of that first one.  Lilly KNOWS she isn't to do anything nasty to humans and most of the time is willing to put up with us but that maternal protective instinct kicked in strongly.

Lilly's foals have been very nice.  Her first, a bay filly seen above left, was very sweet and sold nicely.  Her second, a buttermilk buckskin filly  is currently still at home as a two year old and is curious, friendly and a very nice horse that will be started under saddle this summer.
