About Us

Located in northern Nevada in the high desert of the Great Basin, Colored Cowhorse Ranch is a small breeding facility focused on performance horse bloodlines and tobiano pattern Paint markings.

With over 30 years experience in breeding animals including two breeds of show dogs and several breeds of horses, our current interest is the performance bred Paint horse.  There is nothing as exciting as sitting on a working cutting horse... it is truly the best seat in the house.  When that horse is colorful as well it is even more fun.

A medical background it evolved into an interest in genetics including those involved in color and patterns of markings as well as in genetic defects.  There are pages on this site dedicated to information on color breeding and on genetic concerns.  Feel free to read what is there and check out the links as they are put up.

Another concern that has arisen in the last several years is the production of non-colored Paint horses which used to be called "Breeding stocks" and are now referred to as "Solid Paint Breds"...either way they are Paint by bloodline and lack the amount of white markings that allows them to receive regular registration papers with APHA.  This appears to put them in a group of less desirable horses and decreases their value to the point that some breeders are not even registering these foals and are selling them as grade horses.  There are several discussion groups regarding these issues on the internet and links are provided.

An additional concern is the proposed National Animal ID System....referred to as NAIS.  Many people have no idea what this program is or even that it exists.  Nor do they understand the impact this will have on horses as well as other livestock and pet animals and the owners of these.  Again, links to discussion groups are provided.

There are many concerns pro and con regarding horse slaughter.  Since this issue is so volatile we have elected not to address it within the confines of this site.  If you have issues in this area and wish to communicate privately please feel free to do so.

Who We Are

The owner of Colored Cowhorse Ranch is Dorothy Robertson.  She's been involved in raising purebred animals of one sort or another for over 30 years and has breeding, training and showing experience.

Dorothy is more than happy to assist you in finding the perfect match for your mare for breeding or a foal for you to raise and train and live with for years to come.  If what you need is not at the ranch she will make every effort to put you in touch with someone else who can meet your needs.

In order to feed and care for all the animals at the ranch Dorothy works two jobs, one of them seven nights a week.  This means that it is possible that it might take more than a day or two to get answers back to e-mails.  If you have an urgent question or concern please feel free to call and discuss it or leave a message for a call back asap.
